It’s hard to believe that the Center has been around for almost two full years! We work closely with University of Maine forest resources researchers, in academic fields spanning forestry, parks & recreation, soil science, resource economics, spatial engineering, and more. Maine’s forests offer so many research opportunities and we are excited to work with a variety of excellent researchers, as well as local, state, regional, national, and international contacts and groups on many forest-related topics.
We’re located in Nutting Hall on the University of Maine campus, next to the School of Forest Resources and the CFRU. We would not exist without either of them, and are glad to have the CFRU as an integral part of our research center.
Another vital component of the Center is the Northeastern States Research Cooperative, a competitive grants program that funds research of the 26 million acre Northern Forest, which covers much of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.
The CRSF is also a member of Forests for Maine’s Future, a partnership between the CRSF, the Maine TREE Foundation, the Maine Forest Service, and the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine. This group works collaboratively to inform the public about Maine’s forests, through a website, an electronic newsletter, various print articles, and an annual public expo.
Additionally, we’ve revived the use of the University’s Munsungan Fund, an endowment to fund meetings and workshops related to forest resources issues. We’ve hosted workshops on long-term site monitoring, calcium cycling, and deer wintering areas, and are always looking for interesting ideas for other events. We’re very proud that one of those workshops lead to the creation of a new project named ForCAST(Forest Conditions, Assessment, Status, and Trends), which is shaping up to be an exciting interdisciplinary endeavor for CRSF cooperating researchers.
